The General Directorate of Dams and Large Hydraulic Works of the Ministry of Agriculture is essentially responsible for the hydraulic management of the dams (water supply, planning of resources and ensuring safety stocks).
Besides the engineers working in the central administration, in charge of the planning of water and the daily management of dam works, the GD also has a section working on the reservoir sites. One of the responsibilities of the regional representation of the ministries (regional commissaries of agricultural development) is the exploitation of irrigation districts.
Based on the experience acquired on the effects of drought over the previous periods (87-89, 93-95 and 98-2000), a practical drought management guide was drawn up by a group of engineers and graduates in the Ministry of Agriculture in 2000 (Guide Pratique de Gestion de La Secheresse en Tunisie). This document presents a Drought Risk Analyis in Tunisia and indicates the essential procedures to be followed in the case of drought and steps to be taken during the post-drought periods. Regional groups are being created in order to deal with periods of crisis.
The General Directorate also publishes every year the hydraulic situations of the dams and reservoirs.
