The Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering DICA (formerly Institute of Hydraulics, Hydrology, and Water Resources Management) has more than 20 years experience in research activities related to drought risk and drought mitigation management and has participated, either as partner or with a coordinating role, in several national and international research projects on drought. In particular, during the last decade, it participated as a partner, in the following projects:
Effects of drought on vegetation and soil degradation in Mediterranean countries (contract EC-EPOCH CT90-0028)
Territorial planning and coping with droughts (INTERREG-IIe)
Also the DICA coordinated the following
EC projects:
Water resources management
under drought conditions WAMME (EC INCO-MED, with organizations
from Israel, Jordan, Cyprus, Spain, Italy)
A DSS for drought mitigation
in Mediterranean regions DSS-DROUGHT (EC INCO-DC, with organizations
from Jordan, Syria, Tunisia, Portugal)
It leads an Operational
Unit within the national group of Hydrogeological Disaster Prevention
of the Italian Department of Civil Protection, carrying out
investigations on mitigation of drought effects on water supply
systems and on drought risk prevention and prevention planning.
It organized several international conferences and workshops
on drought, including the following:
Territorial planning and coping
with the effects of drought. Taormina. Italy
Expert Consultation and Workshop
on Drought Mitigation for the Near East and the Mediterranean
(ICARDA, Aleppo, Syria, in cooperation with FAO Regional Office)
It has developed the prototype of
a Drought Monitoring Bulletin for the Sicily Hydrographic
Service and contributes to a National Drought Monitoring System
developed by the Italian National Department of Technical
Services.
