ORIGIN

GREMPA (Groupe de Recherches Méditerranéennes pour l'Amandier - pistachier) Working Group co-ordinated by CIHEAM since the seventies. GREMPA work is mainly based on study and improvement of genetic resources with a Mediterranean origin.

Furthermore, FAO created in 1990 a Network on Nuts

In 1996 an agreement was signed for the creation of the Inter-regional Research Network on Nuts, in which CIHEAM, FAO-REUR (Europe) and FAO-RNE (North Africa and the Middle East) participate.

ACTIVITIES DURING 2002 and 2003

Submission in June 2002 of an Expression of Interest (EoI) to the Invitation launched by the European Commission to prepare the first calls of Framework Programme 6. The EoI is entitled "Network of Excellence on Sustainable Nut Crop Management". Nut tree production, trade and industry is an important economic activity related to sustainable agriculture, often in marginal lands, in the EU. Nuts are major and typical components of the traditional and healthy Mediterranean diet. Europe is the world’s main nut importer and its nut sector needs restructuring. To accomplish sustainable development and food security, a future combined effort in R&D, environmental management and communication is needed. The support of the EU would help to enhance the scientific and technical coordination among countries, sustainable development, food quality and safety, fostering the communication and the involvement of key stakeholders.

- XIII GREMPA Meeting. Mirandela, Portugal, 2-5 June 2003. Scientific Sessions were held on Cultivars/Rootstocks/Breeding/Flowering/Pollination/Fruit set/Pests and diseases/ Harvesting/Marketing/Industry, Orchard management and Physiology/ Biology/Biotechnology. The Meeting had 74 participants from Algeria, Argentina, Australia, Belgium, France, Greece, Iran, Italy, Italy, Morocco, Portugal, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey and USA.

- Publication of Chestnut and Walnut Inventories on research, germplasm and references. These publications are an inventory of the germplasm of each species kept in the main research institutions and also a survey on the ongoing research in the main producing countries. This survey is structured in different sections: the resource (statistics, sanitary problems, storage and processing, chestnut or marron), genetic resources, research projects, researchers and selected bibliography. The information published was provided by scientists involved in chestnut and walnut research worldwide.

- Publication of issues 11 and 12 of the NUCIS Newsletter
This newsletter is issued on paper and also on electronic support on the IAMZ Web page as a pdf format file available at:

and
http://www.iamz.ciheam.org/ingles/pdfs/nucis12_2004.pdf.

The publication on paper is mainly oriented towards Network participants and experts from the South and East Mediterranean. The Newsletter is sent to a mailing list of more than 1000 subscribers.

ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR 2007

RESULTS AND IMPACT

Different results have been obtained from activities carried out within the framework of this network, from the more or less informal exchange of information to the development of a large-scope research project. Since 1990, over 30 meetings on nut tree crops, genetic resources and economics have been organized, alone or jointly with other institutions like ISHS, IPGRI, etc.

Through the network activities, almost all researchers working on nuts in the Mediterranean have been located, and considerable knowledge of their concerns, priorities, programmes and work infrastructures has been gained. A database with their complete addresses and specialist subjects is available at IAMZ.

These exchange activities of the network take place through bilateral contacts, particularly through scientific colloquia such as the GREMPA meetings and through the NUCIS Newsletter, which has become the Newsletter of reference within the field of nuts.

This preliminary knowledge-seeking work has led to a second stage of exchange, prospection and study of the genetic material of nuts in the Mediterranean region.

RESEARCH PROJECTS

During the period 1990-1996 IAMZ co-ordinated a research project on nuts financed by CE-DGVI.

"Diversification des productions fruitières notamment dans les zones en retard de développement par l'amélioration des espèces à fruits à coque non excédentaires: Noyer, Amandier, Pistachier"

INFORMATION BULLETIN

Thirteen issues of the NUCIS Newsletter, the information bulletin of the Network on Nuts, have been published. Each edition had 1.200 copies to 1.400 copies.
